But don’t let its small size fool you. You’ll find many amazing features, Factory presets and effects packed into its small unit, with a variety which is enough to satisfy any Guitarist, regardless of his/her musical preference or style.

The most amazing thing is that You get all of this at a low price of just about 100$ (or 8000 INR). Yes, You read that right!

So, if you are a beginner Guitar player and are wanting to dive into the world of guitar effects but don’t want to break the bank; and if you are confused about which pedal to buy, Look no further. Your wait is over! The Vox Stomp Lab IIG is the best Guitar Multi-Effects Processor for a beginner. This was in fact, my first guitar processor.

There are basically four pedals in the StompLab range: the IG and IIG are designed for guitar, and are identical apart from the fact that the IIG has an expression pedal to control volume, wah or whatever other effect is assigned to it. The IB and IIB processors are designed for bass guitar.

I have been using the Vox Stomp Lab IIG for over 5 years and I have no complaints till now. It has served me very well over the years and I have recorded many songs using this processor. Let us see why the Vox Stomplab IIG is such a good Product.

Construction of VOX StompLab IIG

  • On the top of the unit there are three chicken head Knobs to select the Category, Gain & Output Volume Respectively. There are two foot switches to scroll through the effects, an Edit Button and Two ‘effect type’ selector Buttons. Apart from these there is a small display which shows the current effect and/or the preset that you have selected along with other parameters when you go into edit mode. On the right side,You get an expression Pedal which can be assigned to many effects such as Wah, Tremolo, etc.
  • On the adjacent side of the unit you have One input and one output port for the guitar. There is a 9V power supply port and a Power Button.
  • The back side can be easily opened and you can insert 4 AA batteries. This comes handy especially when you are travelling and have no access to external power supply.

And that’s pretty much the construction of the unit.

Features of VOX Stomplab IIG

1️⃣ The VOX StompLab IIG features an on board tuner. Pressing the Two Foot Switches together activates the Tuner Mode and also a bypass mode disabling all the effects. If you press the Two foot switches together and hold for a second or more, it puts the device on Mute allowing you to Tune your guitar silently which is a really cool Feature, I must say.

2️⃣  A total of 100 factory Presets and 20 User Presets (which can be edited & saved by the user) come loaded with the processor. These 100 presets are divided into 10 Banks of 10 Presets. Each Bank is named after a Musical Style/Genre so that even Novice Players can quickly access the desired effect without actually having to remember the names of every effect in the bank. This is a really useful and Convenient feature, according to me. The 10 Styles/Genres mentioned on the processor are : Ballad, Jazz/ Fusion, Pop, Blues, Rock ‘N’ Roll, Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Hard Core and Other. Apart from these there is a User Category which can be used to stored 20 Effects/Presets edited by the user.

3️⃣  Each preset is constructed from a series of seven modules: pedal, amp/ drive, cabinet, noise reduction, modulation, delay, and reverb. The Pedal module offers compression, wah effect, octave, acoustic simulation, U-Vibe, etc. The amp/ drive module offers amp emulation or different drive types which include distortion, fuzz, and overdrive. There are 44 different amp emulations and 18 drives, plus a selection of 12 cabinets. Modulation, delay, and reverb options have nine effects which include two chorus options, flanger, phaser, tremolo, rotary speaker, pitch shift plus auto, and manual Filtrons. (Source: MusicRadar)

4️⃣  The Two Footswitches can be used to scroll up and down through the presets in each bank. Once you reach the last preset in a bank, it automatically returns to the First preset in that bank, if you press the footswitch.

5️⃣  The Processor has One input for the Guitar and One output which can directly run into your amp or You can even connect your headphones for those late-night jams! The device is powered by a 9V adapter which, unfortunately, doesn’t ship with the Processor. But the good news is that you can use 4 AA batteries. This makes it very compact and portable. So now you can carry it anywhere you want, Practice wherever you want!

6️⃣  The VOX StompLab IIG is rugged enough for stage use, and also small enough not to cause too much congestion on your pedalboard if you intend to use it alongside your other pedals.

7️⃣  Switching between the various presets is very easy using the two footswitches.  Two chickenhead knobs come in handy if you want to edit the presets. One Knob controls the amount of gain and the other controls the output volume.

8️⃣  All the presets are very playable and the tones you can get by tweaking them lead to endless possibilities for your creative songwriting. To edit a particular preset just Press the ‘Edit’ button and change the amp model and other parameters to your liking and save them by pressing and holding the two effect selector buttons simultaneously for about a second or so.

Like I said before, I’ve used the VOX stompLab IIG processor for over 5 years and it has never disappointed me. I’ve recorded many of my original songs using this processor. If you are interested in watching a Sound Demo Video, You can check out this video by Freddy DeMarco.

So now let me tell you what I really like about the VOX StompLab  Guitar Processor and What I don’t like.

  • Very Affordable Price
  • 100+ presets and the ability to save my own
  • Compact and Portable
  • Headphones Connectivity
  • Studio-Quality Effects
  • Easy to use

  • The display only supports Two characters, so you might have to check the user manual for the Abbreviations.
  • No USB connectivity. So you can’t use the processor as a Guitar interface. Hence, You will have to mic your amps in a traditional way.
  • No 9V adapter provided with the retail unit.

Considering the price at which the StompLab IIG retails, I can’t really complain much. In fact, for the price that you pay, You are getting much more.

So is this a good guitar processor? Bang on, Definitely! And if you are a beginner, this is the best guitar effects processor for you!

You can never go wrong with your decision to have purchased this superb Guitar Processor. Certainly a great ‘Value for Money’ Product by Vox.
